The New B C WINE COUNTRY BY ANTHONY GISMONDI Where Place Matters Heralded British 21 S I P B CWI N E C OM Columbia based wine writer judge and critic Anthony Gismondi shares his thoughts on the proposed changes to B C s wine industry and why it matters to you T heres only one wine that matters in the premium wine business and that is a wine of place Where you come om has always been important in wine and in an ever expanding modern wine world awash in technology and easily accessed information place more than anything is the only real diff erentiator a winery can use to tell its story In the case of British Columbias five original wine regions or geographical indicators GIs these places made more of a story outline than a fi nished piece when they were established in the early 1990s Twenty fi ve years down the road there is a new tale to tell and a er a seven month comprehensive consultation on the future of British Columbias system of designated wine appellations the B C Wine Appellation Task Group has come up with a number of recommendations that should improve the provinces wine narrative You can only live on natural beauty and spectacular imagery for so long something B C wine has been guilty of for decades Sooner or later a discerning consumer is going to ask the origin of a wine and more importantly if and how that can be proved Thankfully this ad hoc task group of the greater B C wine industry proposed to start the process of identi ing o cial sub appellations suggesting sweeping changes to British Columbias wine map a map desperately in need of more specifi c place names in and outside of the Okanagan Valley In 2016 the Task Groups recommendations were voted on and the only recommendation that didnt pass was the right to use new and improved place specifi c names on wine labels unless the wine was
