S H A K E S W I Z Z L E S T I R Monumental Martinis TASTE Sons of Vancouver Distillery Vodka Vodka Vodka New distilleries are popping up on what seems like a daily basis in the bustling city of Vancouver British Columbia With a passion for craft cocktails the owners of Sons of Vancouver Distillery launched their micro line of unique vodkas with inspiration coming from their many trips to Seattle and interning with local distilleries While many vodka distilleries pride themselves on having vodkas that are neutral in flavor founders Richard Klaus and James Lester revel in the distinct flavor profiles that come from craft vodkas The duos Vodka Vodka Vodka has subtle apple and saké sweetness with an almost bready aroma most likely due to its Champagne yeast fermentation 30 S I P N O R T H W E S T C O M with Kathy Casey E rnest Hemingway Alfred Hitchcock and Julia Child all famously loved their martinis carving out a nostalgic place in history for this iconic cocktail Martinis bring to mind bygone days of three martini lunches a 1950s sort of elegance and those quote worthy scenes from classic James Bond movies As my drink of choice I definitely have my preferences I know that pure spirit cocktails are technically supposed to be stirred but I like my martinis shaken icy cold strained into a wellchilled glass and garnished with a blue cheese stuffed olive skewer In the end martinis are a personal thing dry wet vodka gin olive or twist its up to you The following inspired classic martini variations each have delicious Northwest flair that will get you shaking it up or stirring if you must be it after a long day at work or at your next gathering with friends MAKE Three Way Martini This cocktail incorporates local products from Oregon British Columbia and Washington The blue cheese in the stuffed olive garnish comes from Oregons delicious Rogue Creamery the vodka hails from the Pacific province and the smoky whiskey wash comes from Seattles OOLA Distillery MAKES 1 cocktail ounce OOLA Smoked Whiskey 3 ounces of Sons of Vancouver Distillery Vodka Vodka Vodka GARNISH Castelvetrano olives on a skewer stuffed with Rogue Creamery blue cheese DIRECTIONS Fill a small martini glass with ice and set aside to chill Measure the whiskey and gin into a mixing glass Fill with ice cap and shake Discard ice from chilling glass and strain in drink Garnish To make stuffed olives place cheese in the freezer for an hour so it is really cold Take about teaspoon of cheese and using your fingers stuff into a well drained pitted olive Repeat for as many olives you think you will need Store refrigerated in a covered dish until ready to use PHOTOS BY KATHY CASEY LIQUID KITCHEN
