S H A K E S W I Z Z L E S T I R The Spirit of Vancouver 34 S I P N O R T H W E S T C O M with Kathy Casey V ancouver British Columbia has a lot going for it Surrounded by snowcapped mountains evergreen forests and busy harbors it is a young city with a lot of energy Considered the Hollywood of the north many blockbusters have been filmed here from Fantastic Four to The NeverEnding Story Stanley Park is consistently named one of the most beautiful city parks in the world But where I think Vancouver truly shines is in its food and beverage scene Besides having some of the best Asian cuisine outside Asia this city is brimming with cocktail and culinary masterminds From Gastowns cocktail champs to Granville Islands famous farmers market Vancouver is an imbibers playground that is notorious for blow yourmind flavors This issue we focus on some of the best of Vancouver with these city inspired cocktail recipes that will have you booking a trip there in no time On a personal note I want to share that this is my last column for Sip Northwest More restaurant openings and global projects have me on the road with less and less time for writing It truly has been an honor to be a part of such an inspired publication MAKE VanCity Amaro Rosa With a bitter amaro try punching up the sweetness with the addition of ginger beer or your favorite effervescent cider as a substitution to the sparkling rosé MAKES 1 cocktail 1 ounce Strawberry Amaro Elixir recipe follows 4 ounces sparkling rosé chilled GARNISH tiny Douglas fir sprig strawberry slice DIRECTIONS Measure the Strawberry Amaro Elixir into a cocktail shaker Add ice cap and shake Strain into a coupe then top with sparkling rosé and garnish Strawberry Amaro Elixir MAKES 6 ounces cup The Woods Spirit Co Pacific Northwest Amaro cup sliced strawberries 1 tablespoon honey DIRECTIONS Place ingredients in a container and purée with a hand blender or process until smooth in a blender Finely strain and store refrigerated for up to 3 days PHOTOS BY KATHY CASEY LIQUID KITCHEN TASTE The Woods Spirit Co Pacific Northwest Amaro North Vancouvers The Woods Spirit Co is home to this uniquely Northwest amaro A well crafted spirit distilled with grand fir grapefruit rhubarb and bitter orange it shifts lovingly between the traditional and the modern Sweet citrus notes stand out first followed by a familiar amaro bitterness The grand fir and BC grown blackberry honey also give it a sense of place
