Doubleback Winery Walla Walla Walla Walla Valley doubleback com L ocated at the winerys Flying B vineyard Doublebacks newly completed tasting and production facility has floor to ceiling windows off ering pastoral southerly views of wheat fi elds and the Blue Mountains The eclectic interior is a vibrant mix of reclaimed wood leather and polished concrete fl oors soft ened with a cowhide rug and even a green velvet couch lending groovy mid century charm By appointment only and for 45 per person tasters can gather round a communal wood slab table or while away the day in the living room relaxing in cushy chairs sipping awardwinning wines and nibbling on cheese In the beginning Doublebacks claim to fame was its co owner former NFL quarterback Drew Bledsoe The hometown football hero combined his love of wine with a return to his childhood roots in Walla Walla aft er a 14 year career in football founding the winery with his wife Maura But with a recent 97 point score from Robert Parkers Wine 64 S I P N O R T H W E S T C O M THE WINES 2017 EliZabeth Chardonnay Columbia Valley Aromas of pear with a little tropical fruit and wet gravel lead to a crisp moderately full bodied weight on the palate with a creamy fi nish 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley Black cherry and blueberry dominate the nose fragrant with rose petals and cedar A rich elegant wine with very fi ne tannins and a long fi nish 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley Concentrated aromas of cherry and plum along with leather notes followed by a dense palate rich with cooked berry compote and baking spices Advocate for the 2014 vintage the quality of the wine is clearly stealing the spotlight along with another homegrown talent winemaker Josh McDaniels McDaniels may only be 30 years old but he has been making wine since his teens He spent several years honing his skills with the Figgins family at Leonetti Cellar before joining Bledsoes team With access to some of the valleys highest quality fr uit he is craft ing wines of distinction in a space worthy of enjoying them Washington
