Grains The Locally Grown Seed of Northwest Spirits SIPNORTHWEST COM Joseph Oregon is a small town of a little more than 1000 people located on the banks of Wallowa Lake deep in the heart of the Wallowa Valley Its a remote and lovely place ringed by snow capped mountains fringed on their lower edges with the thick deep green pines of the Wallowa Whitman National Forest a protected oasis from the vast and lonely scrub that covers most of eastern Oregon Looking up from the valley oor its easy to see why the revered Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce after whom the town is named would have fought so hard to stay here The Stein family has lived in this valley for several generations In the 1970s Ken Stein purchased 160 acres of land about four miles southeast of Joseph His son Dan Stein raised crops of wheat rye and barley on that same land In 2009 Dan Stein hatched a plan with his son Austin On Main Street in Joseph the duo assembled a production distillery in which they make about 100 barrels annually of their acclaimed rye and bourbon whiskeys in a custom made imported German still The bulk of their spirits are made from grains grown on their family farm the BY ADRIENNE SO
