L egend has it that westward expedition leaders Meriwether Lewis and William Clark ran dry of their liquor stash when they hit Hood River Oregon in 1805 Fast forward 210 years Chris Taylor and Roy Slayton came to the rescue by opening Hood Rivers waterfront distillery Camp 1805 Distillery and titling it in honor of the perilous expedition Currently producing three spirits a white whiskey with some in the midst of aging vodka and rum Camp 1805 also recently swung open the doors to their tasting room and threw in a full service cocktail bar to boot featuring the shaken and strained sensations of Portland bartender Eric Bottero Following an East Coast bar trend of white whiskey cocktails from young distilleries Bottero says he wanted to showcase what the young Camp 1805 was making in THE WHITE MANHATTAN The drink more exhibits what we are doing rather than de nes us says Bottero We are all about exploration and experimentation here at the distillery Keeping the drink simple allows for the avors in the whiskey to be present and displayed while it is in a young raw state before we see it come full circle after years in a barrel THE WHITE MANHATTAN 2 ounces Camp 1805 Endurance White Whiskey ounce Imbue Bittersweet Vermouth ounce demerara sugar syrup 2 parts demerara 1 part water 3 dashes Regans Orange Bitters Lemon for zesting Build in a glass add ice and stir Strain into a coupe or a Martini glass and garnish with lemon zest My favorite part of the cocktail is that it surprises people with its complexity being clear and all says Bottero The richness of the sugar against the strength of the whiskey with the bittersweet vermouth it all balances out camp1805 com LAST CALL 8 SIPNORTHWEST COM PHOTO BY VICTORIA WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY MOONSHINE MARTINI
